There had been a fall of snow, which dusted the tops of some of the Howgill hills. Other fellsides were free of snow.

The land slopes steeply here, down to the Lune Gorge, just below Tebay. It is farming land, and has been improved and worked on for centuries.

If viewed large, small white 'dots' can be seen; these are sheep grazing.

On the Howgills graze the Rough Fell sheep, whose wool was prized for its long staple and used in the carpet industry in Kendal.

Also on the fells graze the Fell Ponies, which are very hardy animals and can live on these slopes all year round. They are sought after in America, and we were told that they fetch around ?4,000 there.

Wainwright reckoned that a pair of walking boots would last a lifetime if used only on the Howgills, such is the terrain.

**Janet tells me the the heart shaped wood on the left of the fellside was planted by a farmer for his wife.
