(10) De-squeakifying our stairs We have 100+-year-old stairs in our DC home, and they've been SUPER-squeaky since we moved in in 2006. They've always been covered with carpet; I took the occasion of us replacing the carpet to try to handle some of the more major squeaks. By far, the places where most of the squeaks were coming from was where the bottom of each stair riser was rubbing against the back of the stair below and in front of it. Since I didn't have access underneath the staircase, I did the next best thing -- I put screws at 45? angles into the risers and through into the stringers, trying to prevent them from travelling downward as much as possible. Some risers got two screws per side while others just needed one. Overall, it worked -- the stairs are 90% less squeaky!
